Alvin Ailey
Alvin Ailey - the dancer, the choreographer and the man who founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. There are many ways to introduce this genius, but he is best known as the person who helped bridge the gap between the general public and modern dance, by blending American modern dance heritage with black cultural expression. Alvin Ailey was born in Rogers, Texas on June 5, 1931 and discovered dancing in junior high school on a field trip to see the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. At the early age of 12 he moved to Los Angeles in order to pursue his newfound passion for dance and joined the Lester Horton Dance Theatre, where he was exposed to a racially mixed group of dancers. Alvin Ailey formed his own company the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1958 and was able to reach a mass audience by incorporating different forms of dancing like the ballet and modern dance with Jazz, primitive and contemporary forms. Alvin Ailey created over 79 ballets in his lifetime and his company the AAADT carries on his legacy. Till date it has performed in seventy-one countries reaching, an audience of around 21 million people in over six continents.
