Chicago - The Musical

Chicago is set against the background of the prohibition era in Chicago. A musical satire that takes a shot at criminal justice administration and celebrity criminals, Chicago is based on Maurine Dallas Watkins’ play of the same name. Watkins’ work drew largely from her experiences with real criminals and crimes as a reporter. The play was based on the stories of Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner, who were acquitted of murder.Chorus girls Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly have both murdered people, and together on Death Row, they meet in jail. Now they are rivals for their lawyer’s attention as well as the interest of the press. Other characters include the prison matron, and Roxie’s husband Amos who refuses to take the blame for his wife’s crime.Chicago has won six Tony Awards and has been nominated twice.
