Not to be confused with the movie Juno directed by .., this Off-Broadway musical production is based on Sean O’Casey’s Juno and the Paycock and is called Juno.This is one production where the musicals are simply great and a pleasure to hear. The scores are a Joseph Stein-Marc Blitzstein creation while the play itself is directed by Garry Hynes.The play is not as bleak as O’Casey’s unique work which was set against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War of 1922. Juno is several shades brighter, especially with all the song and dance sequences which make it considerably less hard on the emotions.Victoria Clark plays the title character Juno Boyle, a weary and hard working mother while Conrad John Schuck is cast as her wastrel husband Jack. Celia Keenan-Bolger acts as the couples’ daughter Mary and the entire family sings out their feelings in wonderfully crafted lyrics.The show does stray away from O’Casey’s original piece but is unique in its own way and therefore is worth watching if you have the time.
