This ebullient tale, winner of four Tony Awards, Rent, is based on Giacomo Puccini’s ‘La Bohème’. It tells the story of poor young people in the East Village, and their joys, sorrows and struggles as they try to make a life in art and music. The original Broadway cast included Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal and Daphne Rubin-Vega.Rent has been very successful on Broadway, playing for almost a dozen years and winning four Tony Awards. This rock opera covers controversial issues such as homelessness, addiction and homosexuality – Rent was the one of the first musicals on Broadway with homosexual characters. The characters in this show include Mimi Marquez, an exotic dancer with AIDS and a heroin habit, a musician, a filmmaker, a performance artist, a cross-dressing percussionist, a professor of philosophy, a lesbian lawyer and a landlord. Evocative songs include ‘Will I?’, which talks about AIDS, ‘Seasons of Love’, ‘One Song Glory’ and ‘Life Support’.Rent is playing at the Nederlander Theater on West 41st Street.
