San Diego Padres
Petco Park has been the home ballpark of the San Diego Padres since 2004. Founded in 1969, the team uses white, sand and dark blue for their uniform colours, and have a white ‘S’ and ‘D’ twined together as their logo. The Padres have various nicknames - the “Pads” (pronounced “pods”), the Say May Kids (thanks to winning streaks in the month of May two years running), and the Friars. The Padres’ most famous player was Ted Gwynn. The team has made it the playoffs in 1984, 1996, 1998, 2005 and 2006. The closest the San Diego Padres have ever come to a World Series title was in 1984 when they lost the series four games to one, but this year manager Bud Black is hoping for better things. The teams’ chances of winning a National League West title this season are backed by the presence of stalwarts like Trevor Hoffman, Adrian Gonzalez, and Jake Peavy, catcher Michael Barrett, Justin Germano, Heath Bell, Joe Thatcher, Tadahito Iduchi, Tony Clark and Callix Crabbe. The San Diego Padres’ main competitors are the Seattle Mariners, the Colorado Rockies, the San Francisco Giants, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Arizona D-Backs and the St. Louis Cardinals. This season the San Diego Padres are taking a shot at the National League West title – if they succeed, it will be the third time that they are winning it in four years.
