Spring Awakening
Spring Awakening, the Tony Award winning rock musical has some rather contentious content – issues include abortion, masturbation, rape, incest, sadomasochism and suicide. In fact, the original play by Frank Wedekind was banned in Germany because of these controversial topics. There are ingredients of drama, comedy and tragedy in this story, which make a compelling mixture. The book and lyrics of the Broadway production of Spring Awakening were created by Steven Sater, while the music is by Duncan Sheik of ‘Barely breathing’ fame. Michael Mayer directs the show and Bill T. Jones is the choreographer. Although the time period of the musical is 1891, the score is contemporary, with an indie rock feel. The story will appeal to teenagers, and address issues which concern them. A unique feature of Spring Awakening is the fact the dialogue and clothes are in a formal nineteenth century style.Anyone who likes rock music as well as theatre is bound to enjoy Spring Awakening.
